“Feeding the Starving Mind” by Doreen Samelson EdD MSCP (Author), Robert Graff MD (Foreword)
I recommend this book because my child and I used it in her Recovery. It is a Self-Help book that she had purchased but had never been able to put to use on her own. After she and I dropped the professionals, this book became our Bible. It was simple and easy to read. It also aligned with our current thinking that years of talking therapy wasn’t working and it was ALL about the food.
I wrote about this book and our personal experiences in the Blog Post named: “Anorexia, Brain Starvation, Self-Help” – http://wp.me/p1RmwR-35 .
The book has a quote from an MD, which shook our world of therapy, various Treatment Centers, and failed Recoveries. That quote is:
“I began to investigate the basics of anorexia treatment all of which point to the first step—-that the patient must eat, period.” by Robert Graff, MD.
Here is a link to Dr. Samelson: http://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/provider/doreensamelson It appears from the link that she still practices and her phone number is: Appt/Advice: 855-268-4096
Here is what Amazon says about the book: “Feeding the Starving Mind: A Personalized, Comprehensive Approach to Overcoming Anorexia and Other Starvation Eating Disorders”
“Book Description”: Starvation eating disorders such as anorexia not only affect your body, but also take a devastating toll on your mind. Karen,
This must be the Lord. I do believe in HimI was thinking of your and I look online to see the post. Great. I am currently writing an article for Technorati about #thinspiration. You’ve heard of it. Young women are posting pictures of themselves, model, celebrities to lose weight. The pictures, of course, are of the bone thin celebrities or teens who have eating disorders or are anorexic. And sometimes they post pix of food and fat women to show that this is not how to be. All the social media sites in one way have such posts, though Pinterest and Tumblr have said they are banning such pins. But it’s impossible to monitor and it’s the ethic in our culture that on the one hand eschews disease, yet on the other encourages and promotes it with media images of bone thin celebrities, et. al., who, too, are forced into the rat race of fitting into a certain image.
To get to the point, the National Eating Disorders Association group were quoted as experts…as were some doctors. I thought of you. What do you think of that group? Are they on the right track? I think you are and I was going to take some things from this site. Or if I could ask you, what would you suggest I include about why these young women are drawn to posting images of themselves or looking at images of bone thin women to inspire them…calling it thinspiration. And some even embrace being ana girls and have chosen handles that uplift anorexia.
Since Pinterest and Tumblr supposedly banned the images, I check it out. There are still girls posting and there is controversy about it. Some girls are posting opposite comments and some are uplifting in rebellion the various skinny girl pins. The culture has to change and celebrities have to come out en masse and stop buying into such behaviors…i.e. like Victoria Beckham. Anyway, let me know what you think. I will finish the article tonight. Most importantly, is that a worthy group, or are they missing the point about anorexia?
Carole, I am familiar with the group and from what I know they are moving in the correct direction, but don’t quote me unless I do more research.
Simply put, I believe, it is all about the brain being undernourished. The part of the brain that regulates starvation. With a genetic pre-disposition, an event of mal-nourishment collides with it and anorexia sets in, the voices start and get louder the more fat that part of the brain has lost. Food is the medicine, not talk. I am sorry about the pro-ana girls, but they need our help the most. I suspect they are alone in their illness and this is their connection to the world. Since they are able to use the remaining part of their brain to exist and get by, the anorexia may go unnoticed.
Eat, eat, eat, eat, is what they need to do, but they need the encouragement and perhaps need to be forced for a few weeks until that part of the brain is nourished and they can start thinking of thriving and can quiet the voices.
Hope this helps, my kindred spirit Carole.
I don’t want to write to much and make it too complex. It is about food. It is about eating 3 meals, 3 snacks a day. Food Food Food, it is that simple. Eat to live, Eat to think, Eat to thrive. And it isn’t easy for the sufferer. My opinion only.
Fondly,
Karen
